Overcoming Nerves During the Interview Process

Interviews can be nerve-wracking – we’ve all been there! The pressure to make a great first impression, answer questions perfectly, and showcase your skills can feel overwhelming. But nerves don’t have to be the enemy. In fact, with the right mindset and preparation, they can even work in your favour.

Here are some tips that MTS often share with their candidates:

  1. Preparation Is Key: Research the company, role, and interviewer if possible. The more informed you are, the more confident you’ll feel. Why not take in your notes to refer to during the interview?
  2. Practice Makes Perfect: Rehearse your answers to common questions out loud. Practice with a friend, family member, or even in front of a mirror.
  3. Harness Your Nerves: Feeling nervous means you care – and that’s a good thing! Channel that energy into enthusiasm for the role and your responses.
  4. Pause and Breathe: Don’t rush to answer every question immediately. Take a deep breath, gather your thoughts, and respond thoughtfully.
  5. Focus on Connection: Remember, interviews are two-way conversations. Be curious about the role and the company. Engage with your interviewer as a potential colleague, not just an interviewer.
  6. Self-Talk Matters: Replace negative thoughts with empowering ones. Think positive whilst not being overconfident.

Feeling nervous is perfectly normal, but by being prepared and staying positive, you can walk into that interview with confidence.

To anyone preparing for an interview this week, Ceri Leath and Sarah Jones are happy to share their knowledge and advise with you.
