Generation Z – the first truly digital-native generation – has redefined how mobile phones are used. For them, a phone is a portal to apps, social media, and instant messaging, but rarely a tool for making phone calls.
By 2025, the majority of Gen Z will be either in the workplace or preparing to enter it, and they’re projected to make up about 27% of the global workforce by 2025.
So how are recruiters best placed to cater for Gen Z’s reluctance to make actual telephone calls.
As recruiters, we thrive on connection – building rapport, clarifying opportunities, and selling roles. But when one side of the conversation isn’t keen on picking up, what does that mean for us?
How Recruiters Can Adapt:
- Meet Them Where They Are: Use texts, WhatsApp, or LinkedIn messaging for initial outreach. You’ll get faster replies and better engagement.
- Warm Them Up First: Before dialling, send a quick message to let them know why you’re calling. It reduces the “cold call” anxiety.
- Build Trust Digitally: A strong LinkedIn profile and professional communication style can establish credibility before any phone interaction.
- Offer Options: Not everyone is ready to jump on a call. Provide alternative ways to connect, like video chats or detailed emails.
The Bottom Line:
Gen Z is reshaping the way we communicate, and as recruiters, it’s our job to try and adapt ……. But if you want to do it the old-fashioned way, why not pick up the phone and have a chat with Ceri Leath or Sarah Jones. It’s always nice to have a natter isn’t it???
